The human tendency is to think about the end. It’s not a typical characteristic of the human condition to think or live beyond the end.
It seems like everything that humans have encountered over millennia, ends. From, plants and animals to oceans and continents, from the smallest known particles to the biggest objects in the universe, from everything humans have created to everything nature has created, nothing lasts forever. At least, nothing material.
Another human tendency is to think about things greater than ourselves – spirits and realms not evident to our material awareness. Even so, it’s not typical to think about how the greater spirits and realms are eternal. The tendency here is to think that greater spirits and realms are fleeting, morose and distant.
The tendency is to think like humans. But, we were not made in the image of humans.
God tells us about everlasting life in heaven with Him. This everlasting life is not way off into the future, it’s not a promise that will be fulfilled some day and we don’t need to die to live our everlasting lives.
Heaven existed before the universe was created and will exist after the universe ends. Eternity doesn’t begin or end and eternal beings have always been and always will be. Time itself isn’t natural, but contrived, therefor, time ends as well.
We are promised everlasting life by Jesus in John 3:16; “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” He promises that if we believe in Him we will live forever. That means, if we believe in Jesus, then we already have everlasting life, now.
Once you believe that you have everlasting life now, then you realize that you are living that everlasting life right now. You are already a spirit, an eternal being who is currently co-existing in a corporeal body. Your corporeal body will end, but your everlasting body and soul is you, now. Once your body ends, you will still remember everything from your whole life and more.
To think of our lives in this world as ending is like thinking that our birth is ending. While in the womb, we don’t know about our long-lasting lives once we leave the womb. While in the world, we don’t know about our everlasting lives once we leave the world.
But, we do know about Jesus who rose from the dead. We know about His promises from the Bible. We know that believers are raised into the everlasting world which was, is, and always will be, without end.
All that is material in our world will become irrelevant in the end. Everything without God’s essence must face its end, including humans.
The essence of God is pure Love which was, is, and always will be, without end.
